Hyundai's Darkest IONIQ 9 Yet Is Also Its Most Desirable

The new Calligraphy Black Ink trim takes Hyundai’s three-row electric flagship to a place no IONIQ 9 has gone before—and it’s hard to argue with the results.

Hyundai didn’t exactly need to fix the IONIQ 9. The three-row electric SUV has been collecting awards since it launched, and customers have responded accordingly. But the brand wasn’t content to leave well enough alone. At a media event near its Metaplant America facility in Savannah, Georgia, Hyundai pulled the cover off the 2027 IONIQ 9 AWD Performance Calligraphy Black Ink—and if you’ve ever wished the IONIQ 9 looked a little more like something a Bond villain would drive to carpool, this is your truck.

All Black, No Apologies

The Calligraphy Black Ink is available exclusively in Abyss Black Pearl, which is exactly as dramatic as it sounds. Hyundai’s designers went through the exterior with what appears to have been a single-minded mission: make it darker. Black chrome replaces conventional chrome on the front skid plate and rear garnish. The roof rails go gloss black. Window moldings, inner door handles, even the front Hyundai emblem—all black. The wheels are a set of exclusive 21-inch Turbine Design alloys that, yes, are also black.

The cumulative effect is a vehicle that reads more like a stealth aircraft than a family hauler. The IONIQ 9’s already clean, wind-tunnel-optimized silhouette benefits from the treatment; when you remove the chrome brightwork that breaks up a bodyline, the surfaces flow more naturally. It’s a trick European luxury brands have been charging extra for years. Hyundai figured out how to do it without making things feel cheap.

Inside, the theme continues with a black interior colorway, black aluminum trim, and a black steering wheel. The upholstery pattern is exclusive to this trim. Notably, Hyundai didn’t just paint things black and call it a day—the aluminum trim features organic, handcrafted patterns that give the cabin a texture and intentionality that distinguishes it from a simple color delete.

The Numbers That Matter

Calligraphy Black Ink is built on the AWD Performance configuration, which means you get a 422-hp dual-motor setup producing 516 lb-ft of torque. That’s enough to make the IONIQ 9’s curb weight feel less relevant than it otherwise might. The 110.3-kWh battery works with an 800-volt architecture to support 350-kW DC fast charging—10 to 80 percent in roughly 24 minutes under optimal conditions. A native NACS port is standard.

Where Comfort Meets Commitment

Six passengers ride in a cabin that doesn’t ask them to sacrifice much. First- and second-row Relaxation Seats offer power recline and ventilation. The third row gets heated seats, which remains a thoughtful detail that a surprising number of three-row SUVs still omit. A 14-speaker Bose audio system, a 10-inch head-up display, a full digital rearview mirror, and an integrated front-and-rear dashcam round out a technology suite that’s genuinely competitive with anything at this price point.

The eco-suede headliner—made from corn-derived sustainable fibers—is the kind of detail that won’t show up in a spec sheet comparison but lands differently when you’re actually sitting inside.

The Bottom Line

The 2027 IONIQ 9 Calligraphy Black Ink isn’t a new vehicle. It’s a statement about where Hyundai sees itself in the electric luxury conversation—and that conversation is getting more serious. Assembled at Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America in Bryan County, Georgia, it arrives at dealers this summer.

Whether you need all 422 horsepower and every square inch of black chrome is a question only you can answer. But Hyundai has made a compelling case that wanting them is entirely reasonable.
