Let’s take a look at the potential design of the upcoming X5 G05 LCI. The spied test mule shows slimmer headlights and a completely new bumper. The car will probably adapt many elements of the X3/X4 facelift. Do you like the changes?

It won’t go down the humongous grille route, even though the kidneys will probably be tweaked. The LED headlights are new too, and seem to be a bit slimmer and the front bumper will also be updated. Here, we can see that the brand’s designers dropped the vertical side air intakes, replacing them with horizontal ones that appear to be smaller. The lower grille is about the same size and still incorporates the sensor in the middle, part of the semi-autonomous driving system.
While the design of the tailgate will likely carry over, the taillights, partially wrapped in camouflage, should be new as well. Further down, the 2023 X5 M still sports vertical reflectors and an aggressive diffuser whose shape is shielded from prying eyes by the vinyl stickers. The quad exhaust pipes carry over unchanged, or to it seems, and the makeover could be topped off by new wheels, and paint finishes.
A curved display, perhaps identical to the one in the iX, will be the biggest upgrade inside, and power will still come from the twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8. The engine, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and xDrive all-wheel drive, is rated at 616 hp (625 ps / 460 kW) and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) of torque in the current X5 M Competition, rocketing it to 62 mph (100 kph) in 3.8 seconds and up to 180 mph (290 kph) with the M Driver’s Pack.

BMW has been spotted testing a prototype for an updated X5 M at the Nürburgring.
The update constitutes a mid-cycle refresh that should be introduced alongside a similar update to the regular X5 range late this year or early next. The related X6 and X6 M models are also in line to receive the update.
The tweaks to the exterior will be mild, judging by the prototype. Look for new internals for the lights, along with a revised grille and new fascias front and rear. The interior is also likely to feature some updates, including possibly a more advanced infotainment system with a larger screen similar to what we see in the iX electric crossover.
It isn’t clear what’s planned for the powertrain. The current X5 M is powered by a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 that delivers 600 hp in the standard model and 617 hp in the spicier X5 M Competition.

BMW hasn’t indicated when the new X5 and the hotter X5 M will arrive. We expect the updated X5 line to debut sometime this year for the 2023 model year, but we don’t know if we’ll see the entire model range or just the regular X5. We hope the reveal isn’t too far into the future.
