We have our first look at the Mustang GTD prototype testing on public roads. While it’s still covered in its preproduction camouflage wrap, the large wing and body kit makes it clear it’s a GTD
Ford Performance technicians have been testing the new Mustang GTD at the Nürburgring.
Ford has confirmed that the Mustang GTD will attempt to achieve a lap time under seven minutes at the Nürburgring circuit by the end of the year. Greg Goodall, chief engineer of the Mustang GTD development program, did not disclose specific performance details. So far, it is known that the Mustang GTD is powered by a 5.0-liter V8 engine with an output exceeding 800 horsepower.
Ford is intensifying its efforts to outperform the Chevrolet Corvette’s Nürburgring lap times by testing an even more extreme Mustang GTD.
This new iteration of the Mustang GTD, equipped with rear aerodiscs, mid-mounted canards, and an updated hood, is designed to improve downforce and track performance.
Despite facing 126 recalls, Ford’s focus appears to be on achieving a new American lap record at the Nürburgring, a feat that seems to be a personal challenge for CEO Jim Farley.
The development comes after the Corvette ZR1 and ZR1X set new benchmarks with times of 6:50.763 and 6:49.275, respectively, outpacing the Mustang GTD’s 6:52.072.
The new Mustang GTD prototype, adorned with a golden Nürburgring decal, suggests a potential performance package could be in the works if the tests prove successful.
