BYD is venturing into Japan’s unique mini-vehicle segment with a bespoke electric “K-Car.” This vehicle, tailored to Japan’s strict keijidōsha regulations, was captured in spy photos, revealing a design that adheres to the specific requirements of size, power, and dimensions for this category.
The yet-to-be-named model is expected to feature a 20 kWh battery with a range of 180 km under the WLTC cycle, and a 100 kW fast-charging capability, setting a new benchmark in the segment.
With a competitive pricing of 2.5 million yen (approximately 17,700 USD), BYD’s electric “K-Car” is poised to rival established models such as the Nissan Sakura and Mitsubishi eK X EV, which dominate the market.
BYD aims to capture a 40% market share in the electric kei car segment by producing the vehicle in China and exporting it to Japan starting in late 2026.
