Li Auto has been spotted testing its upcoming i9 flagship electric SUV in China, signaling the brand’s next step in the competitive BEV segment. The heavily camouflaged crossover was caught during road trials, hinting at its design and size ahead of an official debut.
The i9 will take on rivals like the third-generation Nio ES8 and is expected to solidify Li Auto’s position in China’s battery-electric SUV market. Previously, Li Auto built its reputation with extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), becoming the first profitable Chinese NEV startup. Its first BEV attempt, the Mega minivan, fell short of expectations, but the company continues to expand its electric lineup with the i6 entry-level SUV and the recently launched i8 crossover.
Spy shots reveal the i9’s sleek A-pillars, thin LED taillights, headlights integrated into the bumper, a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor, and five-spoke wheels. While official specifications haven’t been confirmed, the i9 is expected to be larger than the i8, likely measuring around 5.3 meters long, positioning it as one of the biggest Chinese BEVs.
Powertrain details are expected to mirror the i8, featuring a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system with a combined output of 400 kW (536 hp). The front motor produces 150 kW (201 hp), while the rear delivers 250 kW (335 hp), paired with a 97.8 kWh ternary NMC battery, similar to the first-generation Zeekr 001 sold in Europe.
With the i9, Li Auto aims to challenge the top-tier Chinese electric SUV market, combining flagship size, power, and advanced tech to take on established competitors.
