VinFast VF9 Facelift Patented in Australia: Is a Local Launch Finally Imminent?
Vietnamese electric vehicle maker VinFast has taken a concrete step toward an Australian launch, filing a patent for an updated version of its flagship VF9 SUV with IP Australia. This marks the company’s first real market-facing activity in the country after years of promises and speculation.
Right-Hand Drive Progress – But No Launch Yet
- VinFast is already present in 11 global markets, including Thailand and Indonesia, both of which are right-hand drive (RHD).
- Despite this, the VF9 is not sold in either RHD country.
- However, a RHD VF9 has been shown publicly, suggesting VinFast is laying groundwork for future launches—Australia included.
2026 VF9: New Design, Familiar Size
The updated VF9, which first appeared in 2021, features:
- A new front fascia with a full-width LED strip across the bonnet line
- A taller, vertically-slatted grille and sunken LED headlights
- Restyled air dams and a chunkier rear bumper
- Trapezoidal lower intake, new alloy wheels, and updated rear outlets
These changes bring a sharper, more modern and arguably more “Chinese luxury” aesthetic to the VF9.
Power & Specs
- Dual-motor AWD setup: 300kW / 620Nm
- 0–100km/h in 6.6 seconds
- Up to 123kWh battery, WLTP range up to 594 km
- DC charging up to 160kW, AC at 11kW
- Size: 5119 mm (L), 2004 mm (W), 1691 mm (H), 3148 mm (wheelbase)
– Larger than Kia EV9 in length and width
Rival Landscape in Australia
The VF9 will compete against:
- Kia EV9
- Hyundai IONIQ 9
- Volvo EX90
All three rivals are already sold in Australia, making the market both a challenge and an opportunity for VinFast, especially with its larger size and performance-focused EV credentials.
Timing & Outlook
- The updated VF9 could debut globally at the 2025 LA Auto Show this November, exactly 4 years after its original reveal.
- The Australian launch remains unconfirmed, but the patent filing strongly suggests serious interest, following previous RHD model showcases in 2023.
