2027 Mazda MX-5 roadster

The iconic Mazda MX-5 roadster is poised for a radical shift with the introduction of an electric powertrain.

This move is part of Mazda’s broader strategy to adapt to changing automotive trends and consumer demands for more sustainable and eco-friendly vehicles.

The electric MX-5 promises to retain the model’s hallmark driving dynamics and fun factor while offering a zero-emission alternative to the petrol-powered variant.

The next Mazda MX-5, known as the NE, is in development with a focus on preserving the model’s essence of driving pleasure, lightweight construction, and accessibility.

While the current ND model will remain in production for several years, discussions about its successor indicate a shift towards electrification.

Mazda Europe’s Design Director Jo Stenuit and Director of Technology Research and Technical Regulation Compliance Christian Schultze have shared insights into the possible inclusion of synthetic fuels and various levels of hybrid technology, ranging from mild-hybrid to plug-in hybrid or even a range-extender setup.

The goal is to reduce emissions and comply with future regulations while maintaining the MX-5’s unique driving dynamics and character.

The consideration of a larger 2.5-liter engine is also on the table, though concerns about weight and balance remain.

Mazda’s approach is cautious and deliberate, aiming to find a “technically sound solution” that aligns with performance, weight, and regulatory compliance without rushing the process.
