2027 Porsche 911 Speedster

2027 Porsche 911 Speedster: The Return of a Rowdy Classic

Porsche is gearing up to revive one of its most iconic nameplates—the 911 Speedster—for the 2027 model year. First introduced as option M503 on the 964 series and heavily inspired by the legendary 356 Speedster, the upcoming model will once again feature the signature low-slung windshield, aggressive stance, and lightweight design philosophy.

Test Mule Teases GT3 and S/T DNA

Recent spy shots of a test mule reveal a clear connection to Porsche’s high-performance GT lineup. This Speedster mule sports:

  • Center-lock wheels and sticky performance tires
  • A central dual-exit exhaust system
  • Dual front hood vents and body components borrowed from the 992.2 911 GT3
  • Front-end elements reminiscent of the limited-run 911 S/T, including the front bumper and fender vents

The S/T, released in 2023, featured GT3 RS-level performance, Touring-style panels, and lightweight carbon fiber parts—all signs that the Speedster may follow in its ultra-purist footsteps.

Engine Still a Mystery, But Clues Are Clear

Though Porsche remains tight-lipped about what’s under the decklid, history gives us hints.

  • The last Speedster (991-gen) used the GT3’s 4.0L naturally aspirated flat-six and a 6-speed manual.
  • The 997-gen Speedster leaned on the Carrera GTS’s powertrain.

Given the heavy use of GT3 and S/T components in the current prototype, it’s likely the new model will either carry the GT3’s NA 4.0-liter flat-six, or introduce a new hybrid or turbo-assisted mill, especially with the looming Euro 7 emissions regulations. Porsche GT chief Andreas Preuninger has already hinted that the brand can’t meet these standards without electrification or forced induction—a shift expected to begin in 2026.

Legacy and Rarity

Only 1,948 examples of the last Speedster were built, commemorating 70 years of Porsche. The 991-gen model was a true collector’s item, with double-bubble rear streamliners, shortened windshield, and a hefty price tag of $274,500 in 2019 (now over $345,000 adjusted for inflation).

It’s unclear how many units Porsche will build this time, but if past Speedsters are anything to go by, the 2027 model will be rare, raw, and likely the last of its kind before electrification becomes the rule.
