2028 Land Rover Defender EV

Due to launch in 2027, the chunky-looking electric SUV is much smaller than the Defender we know today, which will also get its own EV variant. And while it shares some visual similarities, like the wide hips when viewed from the back, plus flared fenders, an upright tail, and a long, flat roof, it will have its own style. Whatever it’s called, we’re expecting the smaller Defender to debut in 2027 as a 2028 MY vehicle, where it’ll undoubtedly be a hit in the UK, which is still lapping up EVs. But unless the current US tariff situation changes, this baby Defender could have a very grown-up sticker price in American showrooms.

The Land Rover Defender Sport is an upcoming electric SUV that will serve as a smaller and more affordable alternative to the current Defender.

It is designed with a boxy and upright shape, incorporating signature Defender styling cues while introducing unique features such as thinner front lights and a sleeker nose.

The vehicle will be underpinned by a new EMA electric platform, which optimizes cabin space and offers a dual-motor electric powertrain. With an expected battery capacity ranging from 70 to 90 kWh, the Defender Sport targets a range of around 300-320 miles on a single charge.

Despite its electric nature, the SUV will maintain Land Rover’s off-road heritage with four-wheel drive and advanced Terrain Response systems, leveraging the precise power delivery of its electric motors for off-roading.

The interior will feature a modern, digitized interface, with seating for up to six passengers.

Pricing is anticipated to start in the high £40,000 to £50,000 range, positioning it as a premium yet accessible option in the electric SUV market.

Land Rover is developing a new, smaller electric Defender Sport model, set to launch next year as the brand’s first EV and smallest offering, designed to retain core off-road DNA despite platform constraints.

The Defender Sport will be built on JLR’s EMA electric platform, making it distinct from the current Defender 90 and slightly over 4.5 metres long.
