Beijing Auto Works (BAW), a Chinese car manufacturer, has unveiled its all-new 212 model. Previously a subsidiary of BAIC, BAW became independent in 2020. The new 212 holds significant importance for the company as it succeeds the previous generation 212, formerly known as the BJ 212, which had been in production since 1965.
The all-new 212 features a boxy design with prominent features such as large bumpers, side bars, wide wheel arches, military-style night lights, a spare wheel mounted on the rear, and ‘212’ badges adorned on the hood, wheels, and steering wheel.
The interior blends modern and classic elements with a digital instrument panel, a mid-size screen, and an abundance of buttons and switches. One of the most interesting features is the integration of air vents within the screen unit.
The BAW 212 is based on a new body-on-frame off-road platform named “WY”. It incorporates a four-wheel-drive system along with differential locks on both the front and rear axles. The approach angle stands at 40 degrees, while the departure angle is an impressive 36 degrees.
In terms of dimensions, the 212 measures 4705mm in length, 1895mm in width, and 1936mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2860mm and a curb weight of 2150 kg. It boasts a towing capacity of 2500 kg. Under the hood, the 212 is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine generating 185 kW, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and a four-wheel-drive system. It has a top speed of 170 km/h.
The all-new BAW 212 is set to hit the Chinese car market soon. BAW also plans to introduce three-door and pickup variants of the 212 in the future.
