Mercedes-AMG is expanding its new electric GT 4-Door lineup with the GT 53 4-Door Coupé, a less powerful and presumably less expensive alternative to the GT 55 and GT 63.
“Entry-level” is relative here. The GT 53 still uses two electric motors producing a combined 544 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque, while its 106-kWh battery supports a claimed WLTP range of up to 503 miles.
The new model also gets an 800-volt electrical architecture, a two-speed rear transmission, fully variable all-wheel drive, active aerodynamic hardware, and a synthesized soundtrack based on a real AMG inline-six engine.
Dual Motors, 544 HP, and a Two-Speed Transmission
The GT 53 uses permanently excited synchronous motors at both axles. Together, they produce a peak 400 kW, equivalent to 544 hp, and 800 Nm, or approximately 590 lb-ft, of torque. Continuous output is rated at 367 hp.
The rear motor serves as the primary propulsion unit and operates through a two-speed transmission. First gear uses a short 11:1 ratio intended to deliver strong acceleration from a standstill while maintaining efficiency in urban driving.
Second gear has a 5:1 ratio and is designed for high-speed performance, highway efficiency, range, and refinement. Shift timing changes according to the driving situation and selected AMG Dynamic Select mode.
The front motor primarily functions as a boost unit. A disconnect mechanism can disengage it under light loads, allowing the car to operate in rear-wheel drive when additional traction or performance is unnecessary.
When conditions demand it, the front motor reconnects to provide fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive. The system can continuously alter front-to-rear torque distribution, while torque vectoring manages the output delivered to each rear wheel.
Mercedes-AMG claims the GT 53 can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 3.5 seconds using a one-foot rollout. Without rollout, the quoted time is 3.9 seconds.
Top speed is electronically limited to 143 mph, increasing to 155 mph with the optional AMG Driver’s Package.
A 106-kWh Battery With Direct Cell Cooling
The GT 53 carries a 106-kWh usable battery operating at 800 volts. Mercedes-AMG quotes a preliminary WLTP range of between 424 and 503 miles, depending on equipment and configuration. Urban range is estimated at up to 547 miles.
The battery contains 2,660 cylindrical cells divided among 18 modules. Each cell measures 105 mm tall and 26 mm in diameter.
Mercedes-AMG says the tall, narrow cell design shortens the distance between the cell core and exterior surface, improving heat transfer. The cells use an NCMA cathode and a silicon-containing anode, with claimed energy density exceeding 298 Wh/kg.
Rather than cooling only the modules or the battery casing, AMG circulates an electrically non-conductive oil directly around each individual cell. The system is intended to maintain more consistent temperatures during repeated acceleration, high-speed driving, and rapid charging.
A Central Coolant Hub integrates pumps, valves, and sensors in a single assembly. It can redirect cooling capacity between the battery, drive units, power electronics, and other components according to operating conditions.
Up to 600-kW Charging
At a suitable 800-volt charging station, the GT 53 can accept up to 600 kW of DC power.
Mercedes-AMG claims a 10-to-80-percent charge can take approximately 11 minutes under ideal conditions. The company also says 10 minutes of charging can add 70 kWh of energy and as much as 332 miles of WLTP range.
Five minutes at maximum charging power can add a claimed 41 kWh.
Those figures are preliminary, and Mercedes-AMG notes that officially certified values are not yet available. Actual charging performance will depend on battery temperature, charger output, and other conditions.
The electrical system can also charge from 400-volt stations. In that situation, the car automatically changes from 800-volt to 400-volt operation.
Maximum AC charging power is 11 kW.
It Sounds Like an Inline-Six—Because AMG Recorded One
Like the more powerful GT 55 and GT 63, the GT 53 offers an AMGFORCE Sport+ driving mode intended to reproduce some of the drama of a combustion-powered AMG.
The system simulates gear changes by briefly interrupting traction and allows the driver to trigger manual shifts using the steering-wheel paddles. The instrument display also changes to a circular, combustion-style layout.
For the soundtrack, AMG used the 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six from the previous-generation Mercedes-AMG E 53 Coupé as its acoustic reference.
Engineers recorded the car from 16 microphone positions inside and outside the vehicle and conducted more than 100 static and dynamic measurements on a rolling road. The resulting sound is reproduced through the GT 53’s exterior and interior speakers.
Drivers can adjust the soundtrack through three basic modes—Powerful, Balanced, and Minimal—and move the sound profile along a scale from Classic to Futuristic.
It is still simulated sound, but AMG has gone further than simply creating a generic electric-car hum.
Active Aerodynamics at Both Ends
The GT 53 uses two active aerodynamic devices at the rear.
A standard retractable spoiler remains hidden at speeds below 93 mph to preserve the car’s clean fastback profile. At higher speeds, it moves through several positions according to vehicle speed, acceleration, driving style, and the position of the front Airpanel system.
The steepest spoiler angle is used when maximum stability and downforce are required. The driver can also deploy it manually.
An optional active rear diffuser extends the effective vehicle contour and manages airflow leaving the underside of the car. Unlike the spoiler, its primary purpose is to reduce aerodynamic drag during sustained high-speed driving.
The driver can manually extend both systems at low speeds through the car’s Aero Set-up menu—mostly for appearance rather than any meaningful aerodynamic benefit.
Mercedes-AMG quotes a drag coefficient of 0.21, a notable figure for a four-door performance car measuring more than 16 feet long and nearly 6.5 feet wide.
The new model is also approximately 1.6 inches lower than its predecessor despite carrying its battery beneath the passenger compartment.
Air Suspension and Adjustable Response
AMG Ride Control air suspension is standard, with adaptive dampers controlling compression and rebound independently at each wheel.
Drivers can choose Comfort, Sport, or Sport+ damper settings. The suspension also changes ride height depending on the selected driving mode and operating conditions.
Six AMG Dynamic Select programs are available:
- Comfort
- Sport
- AMGFORCE Sport+
- Slippery
- Eco
- Individual
Sport mode sharpens accelerator response, firms the suspension, lowers the chassis, and keeps all-wheel drive active.
Slippery mode prioritizes traction on wet, snowy, or icy roads by softening accelerator response and allowing the stability systems to intervene earlier.
Eco mode reduces power, torque, and top speed, regulates auxiliary systems, lowers the ride height, and favors rear-wheel drive to maximize efficiency.
A separate Response Control rotary dial allows the driver to alter accelerator response independently of the main drive mode. That means the motor’s reaction can be softened or sharpened without changing the suspension, steering, or stability-control settings.
A Four-Seat Grand Tourer, Not a Four-Door Supercar
The GT 53’s interior follows the same basic layout as the more powerful versions.
The instrument panel and infotainment screen sit beneath a continuous glass surface, while a 14-inch central display is angled toward the driver. An additional passenger display will be available as an option.
The center console contains AMG’s Response Control dial, two wireless smartphone charging trays, illuminated cupholders, and a covered storage compartment.
Individual rear seats and specially shaped footwells emphasize the car’s long-distance role. A segmented electrochromic panoramic glass roof can switch between transparent and opaque settings.
Cargo capacity is rated at 14.7 cubic feet using the VDA measurement standard, with an additional 1.4-cubic-foot front trunk.
More Range Than Performance Drama?
At 5,236 pounds, the GT 53 is not light. It is also substantially less powerful than the range-topping versions expected to define AMG’s new electric performance era.
That appears to be the point.
The GT 53 trades ultimate acceleration for longer range, slightly lower energy consumption, and more accessible performance. Its preliminary combined consumption rating is between 15.6 and 18.5 kWh per 100 km, while its maximum WLTP range reaches 809 km.
For comparison, the model still offers more power than many traditional AMG sedans, reaches 62 mph in less than four seconds without rollout, and can sustain up to 600-kW charging under ideal conditions.
Mercedes-AMG describes it as the entry point to the electric GT 4-Door family, but this is not a stripped-down base model. It retains the advanced battery cooling, two-speed transmission, variable all-wheel drive, active aerodynamics, and extensive chassis technology of the broader lineup.
The difference is emphasis. Where the GT 63 is likely to prioritize maximum output and track capability, the GT 53 is positioned as the electric AMG for drivers who expect to cover long distances between fast sections of road.
