  • The next generation VW Golf 9, expected in 2028, will be fully electric and based on the new SSP (Scalable Systems Platform).
  • The Golf 9 might share its platform with the ID.3, but it won’t replace it.
  • The SSP platform will use 800-Volt technology, allowing for faster charging times.
  • The new Golf could potentially support Level 4 autonomous driving.
  • The design of the Golf 9 is currently unknown, but it may retain its iconic C-pillar.
  • The Golf 9 is expected to be launched in 2028, following the facelift of the current Golf.

The upcoming 2028 Volkswagen Golf, designated as the Mk9, is set to be a groundbreaking model in the iconic Golf lineage.

It will be the first Golf to be exclusively electric, leveraging a sophisticated software system co-developed with American EV manufacturer Rivian.

This advanced software architecture is part of a joint venture that represents a significant investment by Volkswagen into Rivian.

The Mk9 Golf will be underpinned by Volkswagen’s next-generation SSP electric vehicle platform, which supports an 800V electrical architecture for faster charging and improved efficiency.

The vehicle will also feature unified battery cells, allowing for versatile battery chemistries and technologies, and will offer more autonomous driving functions. While the electric Golf is being developed, production of the current internal combustion engine (ICE) Golf will be relocated from Germany to Mexico in 2027.

The new software system is designed to be highly flexible and updatable, enabling Volkswagen to provide new functions to customers even after purchase.

The Mk9 Golf will be manufactured in Wolfsburg, Germany, alongside another SSP-based model, as part of Volkswagen’s broader production and cost-reduction strategy.
